Exterior doors are usually solid core and are much heavier than the interior hollow core doors. There is only about 1 inch to play with, so you must be careful when cutting the length of the door. The rails at the top and the bottom of the door are only 1½-inch thick.

One tip: clamp a straight edge across the door on the line where you plan to cut. Then take a razor knife and score the line well before making the cut. If you don't, the edge will chip.
