WebCrates was born in Thebes to a wealthy household. When he became a Cynic philosopher he gave away his fortune. Diogenes Laertius (1925) gave several accounts of how he may have disposed of the money. One version has it that he gave the money to a banker, telling him to hold it in trust for his children unless they, too, became philosophers.
