Arguments for 8s STI: I was told 8s STI shifters should work fine with a 7s freewheel, and that even the people at Shimano said so. Brifters are easier to use. For the most part, higher quality bikes continued to use downtube shifters because of the shorter, straight path for the cables, and more solid connection to the frame. Makes for better shifting. The bikes with stem shifters had them because they were often ridden very casually, with hands rarely in the drops.
